## Year thesis

2022 is the year the prompt enters design culture as a new kind of tool, threat, and image machine.

DALL-E 2 widens access to text-to-image generation. Midjourney enters open beta. Stable Diffusion is released publicly and open-source image generation spreads with unusual speed. In November, ChatGPT makes conversational AI a mass event. Designers, illustrators, art directors, students, marketers, and hobbyists suddenly have to ask what authorship, reference, style, labor, and taste mean when images and words can be generated by instruction.

The visual mood around this shock is maximal rather than minimalist. Y2K nostalgia, acid graphics, liquid chrome, gradient meshes, blobs, lens flares, stickers, inflated type, and bright UI cards flood music, fashion, web portfolios, and startup pages.
