# 1994

## Year thesis

1994 is when the early web starts behaving like a public market.

Marc Andreessen and Jim Clark found Mosaic Communications, soon renamed Netscape. Yahoo begins as Jerry Yang and David Filo's web directory. HotWired launches online and sells early banner advertising. The browser is still visually crude, but its future as publishing, navigation, advertising, and commerce is suddenly much easier to see.

Outside the browser, Sony launches the PlayStation in Japan and pushes game design toward polygonal 3D, CD-ROM media, and a cooler youth-electronics identity. Music culture is equally crowded: grunge mourns and mutates, Britpop rises, hip-hop becomes more cinematic and regional, rave continues, and industrial rock brings distressed machinery into mass video.

The feeling of the year: **the underground becomes infrastructure and inventory**.

1994 design should feel early-commercial, not late-dot-com. It is grey browsers, GIFs, directories, banner rectangles, CD-ROM cases, scanlines, concrete, black electronics, distressed music type, and the first sense that digital culture can be monetized at scale.

## Typography

Advertising introduces the rectangular shout: short copy, high contrast, click invitation. In print and identity, a cleaner neo-grotesque countercurrent begins to feel fresh after years of distress.

## Graphic design

1994 graphic design has a new rectangle: the banner ad.

HotWired's early online advertising does not yet look like the mature web, but it changes the logic of the page. Design now includes the click, the impression, the sponsored module, and the possibility that a publication's business model lives inside the interface.

Print remains important. *Ray Gun* continues demonstrating expressive damage; *Wired* continues selling cyberculture in loud print; music graphics remain intense. But the browser is becoming unavoidable as a design surface.

## Product and industrial design

1994 product design belongs to the browser and the game console.

The PlayStation launches in Japan with CD-ROM media, polygonal graphics, memory-card logic, a grey console body, and a brand posture cooler and less toy-like than much earlier console culture. It helps reframe games as a major design medium for teenagers and adults.

Computers and modems become gateways to branded browsers, directories, and online services. The designed product is increasingly a stack: hardware, operating system, browser, page, ad, account, and user behavior.

## Architecture and interiors

1994 interiors begin to include online attention.

The accurate room is not a sleek future pod. It is a desk with a CRT, modem, keyboard, mouse, phone line, printer, CD-ROMs, game console, magazines, discs, and cables. Browser grey and magazine color coexist in the same workspace.

Retail and cultural spaces absorb youth markets: skate shops, record stores, game retailers, clubs, and fashion stores become places where grunge residue, rave fluorescence, hip-hop confidence, and clean technology packaging compete.

## Fashion and self-design

1994 fashion is the moment after grunge's innocence.

Kurt Cobain's death makes grunge impossible to treat only as style. At the same time, alternative fashion has already entered retail. Britpop offers a different posture: parkas, track tops, denim, football references, mod memory, and photographic confidence. Rave and club fashion remain synthetic and kinetic. 1994 film design is a lesson in remixing time.

*Pulp Fiction* turns nonlinear structure, retro title style, diner and motel color, suits, paperback crime energy, and soundtrack culture into an instantly recognizable system. *The Crow* gives gothic urban rain, black leather, face paint, and comic-book tragedy a mass image. *Natural Born Killers* uses media collage, television formats, and graphic assault to make the image itself unstable.
