Stanley Kubrick's *2001: A Space Odyssey* gives the decade one of its most exact futures: white interiors, red chairs, glowing screens, airline-like space travel, silent machinery, and typography that feels both corporate and cosmic. The future is not a chrome fantasy; it is controlled, minimal, and frighteningly calm.

The *Whole Earth Catalog* offers a different future. Edited by Stewart Brand and first published in 1968, it treats tools, books, shelters, systems, ecology, cybernetics, and self-education as one design field. Its pages are not polished Swiss modernism, but they are deeply designed: dense, indexed, pragmatic, and network-minded.
